- Tell us the venue, the expected audience and whether it's indoors, outdoors or in a marquee — that's how we size the system.
- Let us know what's on the programme: a DJ, a live band, speeches and a video all need different things.
- Check the venue's noise conditions and curfew if the event is outdoors or near residents.
- Book the operator if nobody on your team has run live sound before — it's the cheapest insurance you'll buy.
Don't
- Choose a PA on price per box; the smallest system that covers the room properly is always cheaper than the one that doesn't.
- Assume "we've got a mixer" — a wedding DJ controller and a live-band console are not the same thing.
- Set the system up at the last minute; tuning a PA in an empty room before doors is what makes it sound good with a crowd.
- Run a live band through a PA designed for background music and expect it to cope.
